A Real Pain presents the story of two cousins, David Kaplan and Benji Kaplan. David is a husband and father who struggles with emotional expression while working in online advertising. In contrast, Benji oscillates between being the life of the party and succumbing to bouts of depression and anxiety. Following the death of their cherished Jewish grandmother, the family embarks on a journey to Poland to honor her memory and to gain insight into the tragic circumstances that led to her departure from her homeland. The film focuses more on the dynamics of their experiences rather than the events themselves. Benji attempts to connect with the other members of the tour group, particularly Marcia, a divorcee, but his unpredictable mood swings often create distance between him and the others.
